  Bill Thornton PT, DPT, Clinic Director  

Bill Thornton PT, DPT, Clinic Director - Royal Oak location

Bill received a Bachelor’s of Biology from the University of Texas, Arlington in 1997 and earned a Masters in Physical Therapy from Wayne State University in 2002. Bill has gone on to earn his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree (DPT) from Wayne State University in 2013. Over the past twelve years, Bill has had the opportunity to develop and coordinate several specialized physical therapy programs related to catastrophic injuries. Over the years he has taught several courses for the Wayne State Physical Therapy Program and is currently an active clinical instructor for several local universities.

Bill enjoys working with the orthopaedic population (sports medicine to geriatrics) but finds common ground while treating complex spine patients; this is not only a challenge but a musculoskeletal pathology he can relate to after undergoing back surgery 26 years ago to correct a bulged lumbar disc.

Bill lives in Commerce MI with his wife and two young children, Charles and Lilly. In his spare time, Bill enjoys fishing and exercising.

  E. Kamal Sansom, MPT, Clinic Manager  

E. Kamal Sansom, PT, MPT, Clinic Manager - West Bloomfield location

Oakland Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Institute is proud to have E. Kamal Sansom, MPT, join the team as Clinic Manager for the new PT facility in West Bloomfield. Kamal graduated from Oakland University with a Master's degree in Physical Therapy in 2000 and also has a Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences.

With 15 years of clinical experience and 8 years of PT management under his belt, he specializes in orthopaedic diagnoses including, but not limited to, work-related injuries and sports-related rehabilitation. Not only does he enjoy treating patients who are motivated to achieve their goals, he also looks forward to the challenge of encouraging individuals who question the benefits of physical therapy. He periodically volunteers as a PT with medical missionary organizations in countries like Ecuador, Honduras and Haiti.

Kamal devotes his free time to an array of activities but mainly spending it with his wife and his 2 young sons. With his passion for fitness, he enjoys various sporting activities like rock climbing, snowboarding, mountain biking and obstacle course racing. In fact, he has trained for and participated in American Ninja Warrior, Season 6 (Check out his submission video)!

  Karen Balboa MS, ATC, PTA  

Karen Balboa PTA, MS, ATC - Royal Oak location

Karen Balboa joined Oakland Orthopedic Physical Therapy in January 2013. She graduated from the PTA program at Kellogg Community College and also has a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training from Central Michigan University and a Master’s Degree in Human Performance from Western Illinois University.

She has worked in outpatient physical therapy clinics since 2007 and enjoys the wide range of patients and injuries she treats. She has practiced both as an athletic trainer at the high school and collegiate level and as a physical therapist assistant, and has experience treating sports injuries and post surgical spine and extremities. Karen enjoys providing personalized treatment plans using manual therapy and therapeutic exercise tailored to meet the individual needs of each patient.

Karen has attended several continuing education courses to improve her skills in manual therapy for the shoulder, knee, ankle, lumbar spine and pelvic girdle. Her goal is to help patients return to a functional level so they may be able to enjoy life to the fullest.

When not at work Karen enjoys spending time with her husband and four children.

  Doug Johnson, PT, OMPT  

Doug Johnson, DPT, OMPT - Royal Oak location

Staff Physical Therapist, Oakland Orthopedic Physical Therapy Institute, Royal Oak, MI

Doug is a 2004 graduate of Wayne State University with a Masters in Physical Therapy and also holds a certification in Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (OMPT) from Oakland University. He received his DPT in 2014. Doug is currently pursuing his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and anticipates completing this in 2015.

Doug is experienced in the treatment of all orthopaedic diagnoses including spine dysfunction, sports injuries, post–operative joint injuries, and soft tissue dysfunction. He believes in a comprehensive treatment approach, incorporating manual therapy techniques, therapeutic exercises, functional activities, and home exercise program instruction. Doug enjoys treating patients across the lifespan and with all orthopaedic diagnoses but is especially adept and interested in treating patients with spine dysfunction. In addition to patient care, Doug has also taken on the roll of Clinical Instructor for students from Michigan university PT programs.

When not at work, Doug enjoys playing golf, softball, autocross, and spending time with friends and family.

  Kristy Jones, DPT  

Kristy Jones, PT, DPT - Royal Oak location

Education: 2010 Doctor of Physical Therapy, Oakland University

Kristy graduated from Michigan Tech University in 2000 with bachelor degrees in both Chemical Engineering and Business Administration. After working for over 5 years as an engineer in the pharmaceutical industry, she made the decision to go back to school to become a physical therapist. She spent time volunteering in an outpatient orthopaedic clinic and knew this career would bring her personal gratification while helping many others.

In December of 2010, Kristy graduated with her DPT from Oakland University. Before coming to Oakland Orthopaedic, she gained valuable experience working in the acute care setting as well as inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient neurological rehabilitation. She is very interested in furthering her orthopaedic manual skills through hands–on orthopaedic treatment. In addition, she enjoys treating the outpatient neurological population. Kristy hopes that she will continue to grow within all areas of PT, especially focusing on orthopedics and neuromuscular diagnoses. Outside of physical therapy, she enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter and two young boys.

  Stephanie Koslowski, DPT  

Stephanie Koslowski, PT, DPT - Royal Oak location

Stephanie is a 2010 graduate of Oakland University with a DPT in Physical Therapy. Since that time she has invested herself in the field of orthopedics and sports medicine. She has specialized training in Graston Technique, which is an instrument–assisted soft tissue treatment, as well as Kinesiotaping techniques. She has also pursued training in Muscle Energy, McKenzie Diagnosis and Treatment (MDT), and Maitland techniques, which focus on manual (hands–on) joint and soft tissue mobilization.

Approachable and empathetic, Stephanie enjoys treating patients of all ages. As a former collegiate athlete, she particularly enjoys the challenges and rewards that come from treating sports and athletic injuries, as well as post–surgical repairs and total joint replacement.

When not at work, Stephanie enjoys playing indoor and sand volleyball, bowling and basketball. She also enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and her dog Lexi.

Stephanie is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Michigan Physical Therapy Association.

  Sara Schuster, PT, DPT  

Sara Schuster, PT, DPT – Royal Oak location

Sara received her undergraduate degree in 2009 @ Eastern University in Exercise Science-Sports Medicine, subsequently receiving her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree (DPT) from Oakland University in 2013.

Sara has taken advance training in Evidence Based Assessment and Manual Therapy Treatment with a New Zealand Approach covering manual theories including McKenzie & Maitland. She would like to focus future education opportunities in the specific area of sports medicine and orthopedic s and additionally become certified as a Clinical Instructor through the American Physical Therapy Association.

Sara is a very passionate, caring and patient individual who takes particular pride in her ability to truly listen to her patients, helping them to feel very comfortable and informed during their therapy process. She enjoys working with orthopedic and sports medicine patients of all ages.

When not at work, Sara participates in intermural softball throughout the year. She enjoys working out, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
